He's done all styles of singing - country and western, blues, ballads, Spanish and gospel - all with highly gratifying results. Now James Sasser goes psychedelic, and the versatility that is the hallmark of this great singer shines through like the glimmering moon over Waikiki. This bi-polar singer of he-man ballads has injected his own unique artistry into the warm swaying music of The Rose City and has conjured up visions of an alley way, Plaid Pantry and other exotic locales that are but dreams to most of us.
All of the well known and well loved songs of the "Melcliff" are here, "Your Side of the Stone", "Practical Pistol", "Ivory", "Radio Cab", numbers which seem to take on a personal significance. For it was here as a youthful sailor in World War II that James Sasser first became acquainted with Portland apartment living. This sentimental attachment becomes literally heartbreaking in his "Chinatown" and "Drugstore Blues", both farewells to paradise. It is another Eden that James sings about: The people so intoxicated and gracious, the way of life so irresistible, the romance of staying, the agony of leaving.
